24 Hour Pre-Service Program at Rowan:

Alternate Route Program at Rowan University

The New Jersey Alternate Route Program is a non-traditional teacher preparation program designed for those individuals with a bachelor's degree, who HAVE NOT completed a formal teacher preparation program at an accredited college or university, but wish to obtain the necessary training to become a New Jersey certified teacher. In order to be enrolled in the New Jersey Alternate Route Program, an individual must have a Certificate of Eligibility from the State and be employed in a teaching position. To take the Alternate Route classes, the employing school must process an enrollment application for the teacher through the Provisional Teaching Office in Trenton. There are no stand-alone undergraduate or graduate classes that can be taken to fulfill this program requirement prior to employment in a New Jersey school.

Follow the links below for information from the New Jersey Department of Education (NJ DOE) regarding the alternate route program:

Requirements for Completing the Alternate Route Program

Completing the Alternate Route program requires that a series of identified steps be untaken by a prospective applicant in a specified order. Details are identified at the following NJ Department of Education website

24 Hour Pre-Service Program

As of October 31, 2009, applicants for a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) for elementary, middle school specialization, N-12 subject area, and career and technical education CEs must complete "An Introduction to the Teaching Profession: A 24 Hour Pre-Service Program" prior to applying for the issuance of the CE. This non-credit course is a prerequisite of the New Jersey Department of Education for all CE applications received after October 30, 2009. This course also serves as an introduction to the teaching profession for those individuals who are exploring career options.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will receive a certificate, as required by the NJ Department of Education, which documents their program completion. This certificate must be included in the CE application packet. Submission of proof of completion of this class is one of the requirements for issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility by the NJ Department of Education.
