About the Program

This dual degree completion program is offered in partnership with Gloucester County College and is intended for students who have completed their Associate’s degree and wish to pursue both the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Education (Early Childhood Education/ECE) and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies: Humanities/Social Science degree. Students in the program are provided with the skills, pedagogy, and NJ State Certification to teach in the formative levels of preschool, kindergarten, and grades one through three. In addition, the Liberal Studies B.A. (dual major) includes the following two pre-selected sequence areas chosen to provide the interpersonal awareness, communication skills and cultural sensitivity required for future teachers:

  • American Studies: provides students with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of American culture, history, literature, geography, society, politics, economy, diversity, philosophies, and arts through the development of critical thinking, reading, cultural awareness, communication, research, writing, and creativity skills.
  • Geography: provides students with the tools necessary to understand the scientific exploration of the earth, climatology, demography, biodiversity, spatial analysis and environmental issues through social, political, economic, ethical, and scientific lenses.

The B.A. in Education (ECE) / B.A. in Liberal Studies: HSS dual degree completion program is a full-time program that provides students with 90 of the 126 semester hours required to complete these degree programs. It is possible to complete the program in approximately 7 consecutive semesters.

Coursework (Program Semester Hours: 90)

The B.A. in Education (ECE) / B.A. in Liberal Studies: HSS dual degree completion program is offered in a blended format with up to 20-90% of the courses offered face-to-face on the campus of Gloucester County College and approximately 60% offered online. In order to be successful in this program, students must understand and be able to commit the time required for the combination of course work and field placements. The following courses comprise the 90 semester hours provided by this dual degree completion program. Students will work with an advisor to evaluate eligible transfer credits and determine their entire degree program.

Admission Requirements

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the B.A. in Liberal Studies: HSS degree completion program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below a representative from the CGCE Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or indicating any missing items.

  • Gloucester County College (GCC) Students must submit the following completed forms:
  • Non-GCC Students must submit the CGCE Undergraduate Transfer/Degree Completion Application Form (pdf)
  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • Scores of at least the following on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test:
    • Reading Test (Test Code 5712): Score of at least 156
    • Writing Test (Test Code 5722): Score of at least 162
    • Math Test (Test Code 5732): Score of at least 150
  • Those who have not completed the Praxis Core by the time of application, have two options:
    • Option 1: If you have already received the minimum scores as outlined below on the Praxis I exam, you may submit that test instead of the Praxis Core as long as you submit them to CGCE and are officially and formally admitted to the program before August 31, 2014. (The state will not accept Praxis I scores after August 31, 2014.)
      • Reading Test (Test Code 5710): Score of at least 175
      • Writing Test (Test Code 5720): Score of at least 173
      • Math Test (Test Code 5730): Score of at least 174
    • Option 2: If you have already received the minimum scores as outlined below on either the SAT or ACT, you may submit one of those tests instead of the Praxis Core as long as you submit them to CGCE and are officially and formally admitted to the program before August 31, 2014.
      • SAT: Combined score of at least 1660 (Combining Critical Reading, Math & Writing)
      • ACT: Combined score of at least 23

      If you choose Option 2, please be aware that due to pending legislation, the Praxis Core test and the qualifying scores listed for that test may still be required to be submitted before Fall 2014 classes begin if determined by state mandate, which is pending a decision January 2014.

    • A minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
    • At least 24 semester hours (SH) of transferable college credit (60 SH is strongly recommended) or an Associate’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Contact the Rowan Partnership Advisor to discuss transferable college credits.

    Below is a list of anticipated start dates for the B.A. in Liberal Studies: HSS degree completion program. The start dates indicated are based on the university calendar or the CGCE schedule. Your actual first day of class will depend on the course sequence which will be provided by a CGCE Enrollment Advisor once you have matriculated in the program.
