About the Program
Teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) help students from a wide range of language and cultural backgrounds living and working in primarily English speaking environments to speak, listen, read, and write in English. The Rowan University Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) in English as a Second Language (ESL) is recognized by TESOL/NCATE, a national accreditation body for ESL teacher education programs in the United States and is designed for candidates who are interested in working with speakers of other languages. Specific objectives for this program include:
- The development of multifaceted understandings of the unique needs, challenges, and experiences of English Language Learner (ELL) students in order to advocate for their success.
- The development of lesson and unit plans that integrate language and content for ELL students at various levels of English proficiency.
- The ability to instruct ELL students using cutting-edge, research-based teaching methods.
Upon successful completion of the ESL Certificate of Graduate Study program students become eligible for state certification, which allows them to teach English to non-English speaking students. This program is part of the New Jersey Teacher Outreach Program (NJTOP).
Curriculum
